Stellantis, Chrysler’s parent company and formerly Fiat Chrysler, is recalling 280,000 Ram heavy-duty diesel trucks worldwide because of a potential fire risk, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Stellantis says some of the trucks can experience a build-up of pressure and heat inside the transmission, which may result in a transmission fluid leak from the dipstick tube that could potentially spark a vehicle fire if it hits a hot engine part. According to Stellantis, there have been 48 complaints and 16 vehicles have reported catching on fire between March and October of this year, and one person has suffered minor injuries. There have been no reports of crashes due to the issue.

According to the company, a warning light might come on the dashboard regarding transmission temperature before the leak starts, so drivers should be vigilant and contact their dealers if they see a warning light.

Which Chrysler trucks are being recalled?

The recall is for trucks with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines and automatic 68RFE transmissions, of which about 248,000 are in the United States. The following are the recalled trucks:

  • 2020 Ram 2500
  • 2021 Ram 2500
  • 2022 Ram 2500
  • 2023 Ram 2500
  • 2020 Ram 3500
  • 2021 Ram 3500
  • 2022 Ram 3500

What should you do if your truck is recalled?

According to Stellantis, the recall fix is under development. Owners can still drive the trucks, but contact their dealers if the warning light comes up. You can check whether your truck has been recalled by inputting your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in the Ram recall search tool.
